Problems of students, teachers, and administrators of Asbury College and the implications to a guidance program

This study aims to determine the problems of the students, teachers, and administrators of Asbury College, High School Department, the possible causes of these problems, and the implications to an organized guidance program for the school. The subjects of this study were 235 students, 13 teachers and 5 administrators. Questionnaires for students, teachers, and administrators were devised, pilot-tested, and used as major instruments in gathering information and data in this study. Relevant information were also taken from school records and from personal observation. Findings of the study showed that the common problems of students clustered mostly on the areas of : Future (vocational & educational), Finance and Living Condition, and Family Life Situation. The teachers' common problems as revealed by the Teacher Questionnaire were related to their personal inadequacies and teacher-student relationships. The most common problems of the administrators were inadequate medical, dental, and guidance facilities school financial deficiency inability to get complete cooperation of teachers in school activities feeling inadequate in some responsibilities and students' discipline in and outside the school. It was concluded that the probable causes of the students' problems were finance or money, family background and environment, unexpressed feelings, lack of guidance and advise, and much work or responsibilities at home. The probable causes of the teachers' problems were communication gap, finance and living condition, lack of instructional guides and materials, laziness of students, personal problems, new assignments, environmental factors, and difficulty of students to learn and understand English. The administrators' common problems were related to communication gap, wrong concept of parents and students about education, living and economic condition of the school and community, inability of some parents to accept their children's faults and weaknesses, and inability of some teachers to relate and get involved in the total school life as community. The implications pointed to the need for an organized program of guidance services and in-service training for the teachers.
