A brief course in elementary statistics for high school students

This study seeks to answer the following question : What topics in statistics shall we teach high school students and how do we simplify them in such a way that high school students would be able to understand and appreciate them better and be adequately prepared for college work? The proposed course was limited to the basic principles of Statistics. The topics chosen were presented from the simple to the complicated ones. The topics included were : Unit I - gathering and recording data Unit II - organization and presentation of data Unit III - frequency distribution Unit IV - basic measures of dispersion, skewness, and kurtosis and Unit V - elementary probability theory. A do-it yourself activity or practice set based on Philippine setting culminates every unit. The practice sets were so chosen to suit the age level of the high school students. The topics should be taught during the second semester of the third year curriculum to prepare the students for fourth year work. However, the teacher should exercise flexibility in the use of the materials depending on the needs and abilities of the students.
