This study aims to determine the factors that influence the career choices of fourth year high school students of Adamson University Girls' High School. A career counseling and information-giving scheme is also tried to test its possible effects on the factors that influence the students' career choices. The subjects of the study were 80 fourth year students enrolled during the school year 1974-75. Two sets of questionnaires were formulated for this study, namely, the Student Questionnaire (S-Q) and the Parent Questionnaire (P-Q). The study also made use of two standardized tests, the Occupational Interest Inventory (OII) and the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test (OLMAT). Interviews and consultations with the principal and the class advisers were also conducted. A career counseling scheme was tried out between the pre-test and post-test of the questionnaire on factors affecting the career choice of the students. To determine the relationship between the pre- and post-test variables, the Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient was used. It was found that there were significant differences in the students' ranking of factors based on motivation and persons influencing career choice, however, there was no significant difference in the students' ranking of factors based on the cost of academic preparation. Also, there were no significant differences between parents' and students' ranking of factors based on the cost of academic preparation and motivation but, there was a significant difference between parents' and students' ranking of persons influencing career choice. It was also found that the interest test results of the students did not change even after career counseling. Findings also revealed a significant gain in the students' occupational knowledge after information-giving. The students acquired a more realistic and accurate basis for their career choice through their knowledge of the mental ability test results and computed GPA scores. The following were considered by the students as necessary considerations in making a wise career choice : clear self-knowledge and self-understanding, knowledge of one's strengths and weaknesses, awareness of job opportunities, and knowledge of a number of occupations to choose from. It was concluded that, while career counseling may be considered essential in a wise career decision-making, it may not be justified as a dynamic basis of important and remarkable changes in factors affecting career choice. However, the use of group counseling was found to be a viable technique for enhancing the personal growth in self-knowledge of the high school girls. 1975-06-01T07:00:00Z text application/pdf https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/391 https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=7229&context=etd_masteral Master's Theses English Animo Repository Educational counseling Vocational guidance Vocational interests Adamson University (Philippines) Counseling Educational Psychology
