This study seeks to determine the profile of broken homes in the middle and low-middle income families of Manila based on a survey made on 624 high school students from 8 high schools in the City of Manila during the school year 1975-1976. The instruments used for this study were a questionnaire and the records of counseling cases of the researcher and her husband. All data were fed to and analyzed by an IBM 370 computer. A stepwise forward selection method was used to single out the more important factors influencing the dependent variable or the M2 index (Meily & Meily) of broken homes. A multiple regression analysis program was used to determine the regression coefficients and the corresponding F-values of these important factors. In the sample of 624 respondents, the incidence of broken homes was 11.86 percent. The M2 index can be used on any sample similar in category to the sample in the study and by using the same questionnaire to determine the incidence of broken homes with a critical index of 60. Based on the stepwise forward selection method and the multiple regression analysis program, it was found that the factors which exerted a negative influence or inverse relationship with the incidence of broken homes were the educational attainment of the mother, employment of the mother and the occupation of the mother. Also, based on the records of counseling cases of the researcher and her husband, the common problems manifested by couples with adjustment problems as revealed in the counseling situation were the following: lack of communication, socio-economic problems, in-law problems, problems on sex, and value differences. 1976-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/399 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Broken homes--Philippines--Manila Family counseling Counseling Family, Life Course, and Society
