The project is a study on the commercial cultivation of mushrooms in mushroom houses. This is in contrast with the other method of raising mushrooms in the open field. The use of mushroom is intended to take the advantage of a year round production and the full control of two critical variables in raising mushroom, that of humidity and temperature. The mushroom variety to be used in the project is the volvariella esculenta variety which is locally available. The pre-operating period of the project will take around four months. The preparation for the construction, experimentation, and application of loans will be made during that span of time. With the construction of ten mushroom houses, the project will be producing 24, 300 kilograms of fresh mushrooms per year on a .300 kilograms output per box. Highlights of major assumptions are: 1) All major production problems shall have been solved before the start of actual operation. 2) All fresh button mushrooms will be sold to hotels and restaurants in Metro Manila. 3) The loan will be available from the Development Bank of the Philippines in the amount of P175,000.00 at 12% interest per annum. 4) The working capital requirement of the project is two months cost of sales and 10% contingency cost. 5) The government's policy on the imposition of high tariff on imported mushrooms continues. 6) The project will be making its own cultured spawns during actual operation. Market feasibility. There is a great demand for mushrooms and there are reasons to expect that in the coming years, demand will be increasing at a faster rate for the following reasons: 1) increased tourist traffic, 2) population change and trends, 3) changes in tastes and values, and 4) adoption of more mushrooms in restaurant menus. The primary market will be confined in the Metro Manila area. The hotels and restaurants are the target markets of this study. The supply situation here has been erratic and the government restriction on imported mushroom has caused supply to go down.
