The purpose of this study is to survey the common problems and personality adjustments of the 382 grades five and six pupils of the University of San Carlos school year 1977-1978 which will be used as a basis for a group counseling model. The school under study is an exclusive boys and girls institution in separate department. Specifically, this paper attempts to answer the following questions: 1) What are the common problems of grades five and six pupils of the University of San Carlos? 2) What is the personality adjustment profile of the grades five and six pupils of the University of San Carlos? 3) Is there a relationship between pupil’s common problems and personality adjustments? 4) What group counseling model can be proposed to supplement the present guidance services in assisting the grades five and six pupils? For the gathering of data, a descriptive design was employed in this study. The instruments employed in this research were the SRA Junior Inventory Form S and the California Test of Personality Elementary Level Form AA. The instruments were administered to the entire grades five and six pupils of the University of San Carlos with the assistance of the guidance staff. Profiles were made to show the distribution of subjects along the problem areas and the personality adjustment variables. Descriptive statistics as the means and the standard deviations were computed to give a comprehensive view of the distribution of the population. For the SRA Junior Inventory Form S, weighted points were used in the ranking of the intensity of problems in each problem area. Then, coefficients of correlation were computed to determine the relationship between problem areas and personality adjustment factors. The t-test was used to test the significance of the obtained coefficients. In view of the foregoing results and in answer to the questions raised in the stated problems, the following conclusions are made: 1) The common problems of grades five and six pupils of the University of San Carlos are the following: problems related to schooling, problems related to their homes, problems related to themselves, problems related to getting along with other people, and general problems. 2) The Total Personality Adjustment profile of the intermediate pupils under study is discovered to be inadequate in both personal and social adjustment components. 3) The hypothesis formulated in this study is accepted stating that there is a significant relationship between common problems and personality adjustments of the intermediate pupils under research. 4) The group counseling model that is proposed in this study to meet the common problems and personality adjustments of the grades five and six pupils under investigation is a structured kind as suggested by Ohlsen (1970) that is good for children. 1978-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/680 Master's Theses English Animo Repository School children--Psychology, Group guidance in education, University of San Carlos (Philippines) Counseling
