Summary:This study investigates whether the Intensive Course Program is improving and in which area(s) (usage, vocabulary or reading comprehension) it mostly needs improvement as rated by the students' results compared in the pre- and post-test scores of the University Diagnostic Test for Freshmen from 1975 until 1978. This research made use of the descriptive-statistical method and the instrument for data gathering was the University Diagnostic Test for Freshmen to obtain the pre- and post-tests scores of the first year students of the English Department during the years 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1978. With the data gathered and analyzed, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. During the years 1975 to 1977, the Intensive Course Program did not show a very marked improvement in all the three areas. 2. Some marked improvement was found in the Intensive Course Program in 1978 in all the areas as compared to the previous three years. This improvement may be due to the fact that the Lado English Series was used in that year. 3. From the three areas, it was found that there was a substantial improvement in the three areas for all the four years but the most substantial improvement seemed to come from the Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension areas. 4. From all the four years, it appeared that 1978 showed the best improvement in the three areas. However, looking at the computed F value of the Usage area, it was found to be the lowest compared to Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension. Therefore, it seemed that some improvements are needed for Usage. 5. The Lado English Series has helped the students improve in the areas of Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension but no improvement was seen in the area of Usage.
