After the technical feasibility of abaca tuxy ribbon as a pulping material had been established, a study on the impact of commercial production of tuxy ribbon on the socio-economic condition of abaca farmers in Albay was conducted. The result shows that the abaca farmers are willing to shift to tuxy ribbon fibers provided there is a market for these fibers and thea they will be taught on how to produce them. Also, the farmers depend on the leadership of Abaca Industry Development Authority (now Fiber Development Authority) to promote tuxy ribbon to the abaca pulb manufacturers and to provide them information on the production of these fibers.The general objective of this study is to determine the market potential of tuxy ribbon. Specifically, 1. to determine the current and future demand for abaca fiber as pulping material; 2. identify the abaca end-products and fiber grades which can be substituted with tuxy ribbon; 3. determine the competitive advantage of tuxy ribbon vis-a-vis other fiber grades and imported long fiber wood pulp materials; 4. understand the quality requirements for pulping materials of pulp and paper mills; and 5. understand the distribution system for pulp and paper products.
