Summary:This descriptive study was made to determine the characteristics of the male and female volunteer telephone counselors in Seoul, Korea. Also, some specific questions were asked, in relation to the primary problem of the study. The 151 subjects who participated in this study constituted the entire population of volunteer telephone counselors at the Life Line Cater in Seoul, Korea from the years 1980 to 1983. The subjects comprised 43 males and 108 females. Their ages range from 25 to 60. All of them had undergone the required training prior to their rendering volunteer counseling services over the telephone. Data gathering was personally done by the researcher who went to the Center to gather from the file, records, all data pertinent to this study. The data gathered were tabulated. Frequency counts and percentages were used for the analyses and interpretation of the data. The result of the study showed that most of the male and female volunteers have ages ranging from 25 to 50 there are more female than male volunteers more males have higher education than females more males are employed than females there are more married male and female volunteer counselors than the unmarried. Male volunteers have longer average length of stay (149.5 hours) than women who rendered 107.7 hours as average length of stay. Both male and female volunteer telephone counselors included in this study have personality traits indicative of normal social and personal adjustment as indicated by their T scores on the MMPI. There is not much difference between the male and female subjects in all the clinical scales of the MMPI, indicating that all of them are capable of functioning well. From the findings, the following conclusions are formulated: Both male and female volunteer counselors under study showed no distortions in their personality or behavior manifestations as reflected in their obtained T scores on the MMPI. They are thus capable of working under stressful conditions, which counselors are like to meet. The Life Line Center has no set criteria in so far as sex, civil status and work status are concerned, for the selection of volunteer counselors. The screening committee of the Life Line Center uses definite criteria in terms of personality in the choice of volunteer counselors as seen in the more or less similar scores of the subjects under study. The Life Line Center is open to volunteers with a minimum high school degree and age of 25.
