Description
Summary:This study was triggered by the awareness of the school's difficulty in securing laboratory equipment and chemicals compounded by the fact that without the needed equipment, most often experimentation is done away with. The study involved the development, construction and tryout of the improvised apparatus for selected laboratory experiments. Six experiments were selected for this study. The experiments were selected on the basis of availability of materials locally, relevance of concepts and principles and ease in carrying out the improvisations and performance of the experiments. The effectivity of the improvised apparatus were tested using the high school and introductory college chemistry students of the Antique National School. The results of the experiments using the improvised apparatus were compared with that using the commercial apparatus on the basis of the following points: a) accuracy, b) cost of equipment, and c) ease of performance of the experiment. Results of the tryout showed that the improvised apparatus can clearly and effectively demonstrate the concepts involved. Objectives of the modified experiments were also attained.
