The subjects of this study were 60 upper secondary students from each of the two schools (60 out of 160 for one, and 60 out of 163 for the other). The age of the students ranges from 15-18. The questionnaire which was adapted and developed by the researcher and others was used for the purpose of this study. The questionnaire was distributed to the students and the completed was used to assess the students' pattern of use and students' view of counseling services and point-biserial coefficient was used to determine the relationship between use and nonuse of counseling, and the independent variables, namely dependent/independent attitude, readiness to open up problems to others, knowledge of counseling services, belief regarding solving and availability of the counselor. The finding of this study reveal that there were more nonusers (69.17 percent) of counseling than users (30.83 percent). The main reason given for the use of the counseling was to get educational information (53.57 percent). The reason for nonuse of counseling facilities was that the students know little or nothing at all about the center (26.50). The findings also showed that the users (35.14 percent, 75.68 percent) and nonusers (38.55 percent, 77.11 percent) would go to Peer for help when they are faced with Study Problem and Personal Problem, and they would prefer to go to parents for help if they have Family problem (32.84 percent, 32.53 percent). The nonusers express their view of counseling as for those who are in need only. Both users and nonusers viewed the job of counselor similarly. They viewed them as an advisers who can help them in academic problem. Though the nonusers had a positive view about counseling, still they do not avail of the counseling. Three out of five independent variables, readiness to open up to others (r pb = .267,p.05), knowledge of the counseling services (rpb = .5034, p .05) and availability of the counselor (rpb=.1974, p .05), were found to be significantly correlated to the use/nonuse of counseling services. The other two variables, dependent/independent attitude and belief regarding problem solving were not significantly correlated to use/nonuse of counseling. From this study the researcher recommended: 1) That further investigation into the dependent/independent attitude and belief regarding problem solving be done, 2) That the information about counseling and role of counselor be given to students, 3) That administration and counselor of the school concerned reorganize the counseling center, and 4) That a reach-out program to contact the students be implemented. 1991-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/1308 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Counseling Counseling in secondary education -- Thailand High school students -- Thailand |
