The cooperatives education program of the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolacion: an alternative education for the poor

The major purpose of the study is two-fold (a) to describe and assess the impact and effectiveness of the Cooperatives Education Program of OSA schools and (b) on the basis of the description and evaluation of the project, evolve a model of CEP as a prototype of an Alternative Education Program for OSA schools. Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the CEP of the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolacion as implemented in four (4) selected schools as to: 1.1 Historical background of the CEP project 1.2 Philosophy, goals and objectives 1.3 Organization and staffing 1.4 Management and governance 1.5 Programs and projects 1.6 Present status 1.7 Problems, lessons and insights gained 2. How do the administrators and personnel perceived the goals and objectives of CEP in terms of its: 2.1 congruency with the OSA mission statement 2.2 clarity and understandability 2.3 relevance to the present needs of the students and the community being served by the schools. 3. How do the administrators, personnel and students perceive the CEP in terms of the following: 3.1 Effectiveness of teachers teaching cooperatives 3.2 Effectiveness of management of the multi-purpose cooperatives and 3.3 Effectivenss for which CEP has achieved its goal of developing leadership in community related projects. 4. To what extent has the Cooperatives Education Program attained the following objectives: 4.1 Involvement in the different CEP activities 4.2 Value of saving money 4.3 Business skills developed 4.4 Equality and participation in decision-making. 4.5 Senses of responsibility 4.6 Brotherly love, unity and cooperation. 5. What model of alternative education program can be derived from the OSA-CEP experiences? 6. What are the implications of the model to the CEP of the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation's policy and management program? Research Subjects: There was a total of 537 respondents: 23 administrators, 81 personnel, and 533 fourth year students of four OSA selected schools in Negros Occidental namely: (1) La Consolacion College, La Carlota City (2) La Consolacion School, Hinigaran (3) La Consolacion School, Isabela and (4) La Consolacion Academy, Murcia. All administrators were taken as respondents. Personnel and students were selected using purposive sampling, i.e. for personnel, only those who have been members of the multi-purpose cooperatives for at least one year, while the students were those who have been exposed to the program for the last three years. Instruments and Sources of Data: The study used the descriptive-evaluative method and qualitative case analysis. The descriptive-evaluative method utilized three sets of questionnaire entitled Administrators', Personnel's and Students' Questionnaire. Part I of the questionnaire included items on the background profile of the respondents. Part II considered four sections: Section I contained questions for evaluating the degree to which the goals and objectives of CEP have been achieved. Section II evaluated the effectiveness of teachers teaching CEP, Section II was designed to assess the effectiveness of: (a) the management of multi-purpose cooperatives, and (b) the degree to which CEP has achieved its goal of developing leadership in community related projects.
