Description
Summary:This study seeks to establish the construct validity of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) using Bell Adjustment Inventory (BAI) and Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) as criteria. he subjects were 205 Filipino college seminarians from eight different religious congregations around Metro Manila. The instruments used to gather the data were Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Bell Adjustment Inventory (BAI) and Personal Orientation Inventory (POI). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (M, SD) to find out the level of adjustment and self-actualization among the types, and one-way ANOVA to find out the significant relationship between Jungian psychological types and the subscales of adjustment and self-actualization. The results revealed the following: (a) Five types came out predominant among the respondents: ESTJ, ISTJ, ESFJ, ISFJ, and ENTJ types. (b) ESFJ type was the best in adjustment and ENTJ type was the poorest among the types. The ISTJs were the best in actualization the ENTJs were the lowest/poorest. (c) There was no significant relationship between Jungian psychological type and level of adjustment, nor was significant relationship between Jungian psychological types and level of self-actualization. Based on the result of this study, the researcher concluded that Bell Adjustment Inventory and Personal Orientation Inventory, do not correlate with Myers-Briggs Type Indicators. They do not provide evidence of construct validity. ESFJ group tended to experience more adjustment satisfaction than other types, while ISTJ group tended to be more self-actualizing than others. The researcher recommended the following:(1) MBTI can be used to find out the development of the Filipino seminarians in their spiritual training as well as their community life. (2) To verify further the construct validity of MBTI other personality tests can be considered. (3) To confirm the findings of this study, other samples, e.g., other age groups, non-seminarians would be studied. (4) The study can be replicated on more heterogeneous samples, e.g., males-females, college students from various courses. (5) This finding challenges the formators of Filipino college seminaries to improve their strategy in personality formation especially to assist the seminarians to develop their Feeling as well as their Thinking preference, their Perception as well as their Judgment preference. (6) Another study can be conducted using the combination of the preferences in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as variables.
