A karyotype investigation of the hepatopancreas in Pomacea spp., (golden snail)

Pomacea spp. (golden snails) were collected from two sites: pond of Natural Science Research Institute (NSRI), U.P. Diliman and lagoon of De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, Cavite. Samples were injected with colchicine and incubated. Hepatopancreas were stripped out from the specimen collected from...

Diliman and lagoon of De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, Cavite. Samples were injected with colchicine and incubated. Hepatopancreas were stripped out from the specimen collected from the two sites. The tissue was homogenized and cell suspension was prepared. Cells were plated on slides and consequently stained with Giemsa. A total of 100 metaphase cells were screened from each sites. Each spread was analyzed as to chromosome number and morphology (length, centromeric location, and arm ratio).Chromosome number per cell ranged from 8 to 15 from specimen obtained from Cavite while for Diliman, chromosome number ranged from 8 to 14. The highest number of chromosome observed was 12 for the two sites. The karyotype was found to consist of metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. The average length of chromosomes of collected snails ranged from 4.6 to 5.0 um for U.P. Diliman and 3.6 to 5.3 um for DLSU-Dasmarinas. The measurements were found to be statistically different for the two sites. Arm lengths, arm ratios and centromeric indices were measured and compared. 1996-01-01T08:00:00Z text application/pdf https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/1753 https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=8591&context=etd_masteral Master's Theses English Animo Repository Snails Gasteropoda Karyotypes Chromosomes Pancreas--Cytology Biology
