Description
Summary:This study explores the use of story narratives as an alternative method for clarifying work values. Four story scenarios were developed with various work value cluster combinations utilizing two mediums -- printed textual form and broadcast audio form. The story narratives were then tested and compared to a traditional test, the Work Values Inventory (WVI), in terms of effectiveness. Results showed that the story narratives were effective in clarifying work values because they were able to situate work values within job setting realities, and ranked high in clarity and understandability. The printed stories rated higher than the WVI in effectiveness, but surprisingly, the narrated stories ranked even lower than the WVI. The findings suggest that further studies must be undertaken to maximize the strength of stories as a method in clarifying work values. Conversely, the limitations discovered in the study pose challenges for the development, administration and utilization of such an unconventional method.
