Technological advances in networking have made it an indispensable tool for communications. The different types of networks include the Local Area Network (LAN) which covers a small area, the Wide Area Network (WAN) which covers a larger area, the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) which is a cross between LAN and WAN, and recently the Internet, which practically covers the whole world. Networks have played a vital role in communication in the daily lives of people, may it be in business or personal matters. Continuous improvement in the existing technology is important to fully utilize the potentials of today's networks.Voice Mail provides users another way to send and receive messages. One can actually record his voice and the receiver can listen to the sender's voice.This thesis focuses on developments on the LAN. The computers in the present LANs communicate by exchanging data. This project aims to improve the network by allowing the exchange of audio signals. The use of a microphone, speakers, sound card, and additional software is necessary to implement voice mail.A user can record his voice on any terminal connected to the network, then send it to the server. On the other hand, a user who wants to retrieve or listen to messages send to him may do so on any of the client terminals. All communication between users pass through the server. This setup allows a user to send messages to another user even when the receiver is not logged-in.
