Description
Summary:The chloroform extract of the matured seeds of Swietenia macrophylla afforded swietenolide and a mixture of triglycerides. The structure of swietenolide was elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and was confirmed by acetylation. The triglyceride was characterized by 1D and 2D NMR and 1R spectroscopy. Swietenoloide and its derivatives as well as the triglyceride were found to inhibit the growth of T. mentagrophytes, but were inactive against E. coli, S. aureus and C. albicans. Both swietenolide and the mixture of triglycerides were found to reduce the number of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MPCE) induced by Mitomycin C by 57 percent and 21.33 percent, respectively.
