This practicum report intends to provide a clear understanding of the Design and Engineering of Structured Cabling System. It studies the concept, requirements and applications of the Structured Connectivity Solutions developed by Lucent Technologies for Telecommunications. Part of the study is an inspection and evaluation of the functions and features of the different components and the over-all system of structured cabling. To gain a broader knowledge of the cabling system, the author participated in the supervision of actual site installation and got involved in the design of the system's layout and configuration. He also performed plant/site visit to get update on the progress of actual cabling installation, which also includes getting involved in testing of the links. As communications technology has evolved, Lucent Technologies SYSTIMAX SCS has evolved along with it. Lucent Technologies, formerly AT&T Network Systems, has been a pioneer in the creation of structured cabling systems. Prior to 1985, building wiring plans really only addressed telephone communications. The initial offering of a total system approach, the Premises Distribution System (PDS), emerged when data communications were typically at rates of 1 to 4 Mbps. The TIA-568-A telecommunications cabling standard was actually patterned after the Lucent's PDS. Even though the terminology used in SYSTIMAX SCS is different than that used in the TIA standard, the SYSTIMAX SCS is compliant with the guidelines contained in those standards. Today, as data speeds and applications continue to grow, the SYSTIMAX SCS solution easily handles voice, data, video, image. SYSTIMAX SCS is also used for intelligent buildings, which handles voice, data, and image applications involving building control systems as Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) security and Fire, Life, and Safety (FLS). It provides a total system approach to building wiring and this structured cabling system can be used for all telecommunications needs, at present and in the future. SYSTIMAC SCS follows the rules for a structured cabling system providing for modularity, flexibility, open architecture and standards compatibility. Its optimal performance means consistent, reliable data transmission at speeds up to 1.2 Gbps measured in terms of Attenuation, Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT), Attenuation for Crosstalk Radio (ACR), Return Loss (RL), and Balanced mode transmission minimizing emissions and optimizing noise immunity. The practicum program undertaken by Masters of Engineering students helps them get more exposures in their field of specialization. It gives them the chance to study and learn new technologies and experience actual applications. The practicum program or activity is therefore, relevant for the students. 1998-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/1975 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Telephone lines Cable structures Engineering design Structural engineering Telephone systems Building -- Mechanical equipment -- Installation Structural Materials Structures and Materials Systems and Communications |
