Chromosome analysis of Rana limnocharis vittigerra (common ricefield frog) collected from selected areas of Luzon

Karyotypes of Rana limnocharis vittigera collected from three sites, Atimonan, Quezon Binangonan, Rizal Munoz, Nueva Ecija are analyzed using the bone marrow cells. The modal chromosome number was determined. The relative length (RL), the arm ration (AR) and the centromeric index (CI) of each chromos...

The relative length (RL), the arm ration (AR) and the centromeric index (CI) of each chromosome pair characteristic of each collection site were compared. The results showed that the diploid chromosome number is 26, the Fundamental Number is 52 and there is no heteromorphic sex pairs of chromosomes. These 26 chromosomes are divided into two groups according to size, of which one group contains five pairs (Numbers 1-5) of large chromosomes and the other contains eight pairs (Numbers 6-13) of small-sized chromosomes. Each chromosome pair was numbered in the order of decreasing size except numbers 8 and 11 which were considered to be apparently homologous in their arm ratio to the respective chromosomes of the other Rana limnocharis subspecies.Chromosome pair numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12 and 13 are metacentric whereas chromosome pair numbers 4, 8 and 11 are submetacentric. Chromosome pair number 9 is metacentric with a secondary constriction in its long arm.The karyotypes of Rana limnocharis vittigera presented here does not differ from population to population as shown by the insignificant differences among means (t-test, p0.05) of RL, AR and CI. To determine the uniformity of the environment where the specimens were taken, basic water quality measurements, like temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate and phosphate contents were made. Analysis of variance revealed that there is no significant difference (p0.05) among the values of the physico-chemical parameters tested except for pH. 1993-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/1987 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Frogs Chromosomes Karyotypes Amphibians as laboratory animals Aquaculture and Fisheries Cell Biology Other Cell and Developmental Biology
