Retrofitting and testing of an on-line gas chromatography apparatus using the reaction NO-C3H6-02 over ceria-alumina catalyst

The Gas Chromatography apparatus donated by the Niiyama Laboratory in Japan is retrofitted to conforme with the desired set-up. Various connections are modified and new gas lines are installed. To test the stability of the newly retrofitted Gas Chromatography (G.C.) apparatus, the effect of the TCD...

The Gas Chromatography apparatus donated by the Niiyama Laboratory in Japan is retrofitted to conforme with the desired set-up. Various connections are modified and new gas lines are installed. To test the stability of the newly retrofitted Gas Chromatography (G.C.) apparatus, the effect of the TCD oven temperature on the separation of air and the effect of the column temperature on the retention time of the propylene and carbon dioxide were conducted. Also, the performance of the G.C. apparatus during the actual experimental operation was investigated. The set-up utilized a fixed bed flow reactor system equipped with the newly retrofitted G.C. Apparatus and Nitrogen Oxide Analyzer. The effects of temperature and the activity time on the conversion of nitrogen oxides and propylene, oxygen consumption, as well as the yields of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were studied. It was shown that during the time course activity test, an activation of catalyst occurred. Also, the conversion of nitrogen oxide and propylene, as well as yields of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide increased as the temperature of the reaction increased. The experiment showed that ceria-alumina gave a 24.23 percent NO conversion and 41.01 percent C3H6 conversion at 500 degrees Centigrade. Experimental results revealed that ceria-alumina catalyst shows higher activity than alumina in the reduction of NO. Ceria-alumina is also an effective oxidation catalyst for it promotes a high propylene oxidation. Ceria-alumina, therefore, is a promising catalyst for the reduction of NO using propylene as reducing agent with oxygen. Based on the test conducted, it is likewise proven that the Gas Chromatography apparatus donated by the Niiyama Laboratory was successfully modified. It was retrofitted into good working condition suitable to be utilized in any catalytic research work. 1998-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_masteral/1993 Master's Theses English Animo Repository Gas chromatography Chromatographic analysis -- Equipment and supplies Gases -- Separation Chemical inhibitors Catalysts Cerium oxides Biochemical and Biomolecular Engineering Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Engineering Petroleum Engineering
