Summary:The author in this practicum project undergoes training at the Pilipino Telephone Corporation, a full-fledged telecommunications company with business interests in cellular, paging and landline communications. The author sets out to improve on the existing course curriculum for the Mobile Cadet Program, and at the same time, develop a training program that can benefit the academe. The author came out with a program centered on four issues: 1. Network Components 2. Call Processing 3. Frequency Management 4. Digital Cellular. The output of the project consisted of two items: Powerpoint Presentations and an Instructor Guide. Powerpoint presentations totaled twelve (12) 1.44 MB 3.5 disks, representing eleven (11) presentation modules. Modules 1 to 7 and 10 to 12 have one disk each. Two disks were used in Module 13 (CDMA Call Processing). Microsoft PowerPoint Version 7.0 for Windows 95 was used in the development. These presentations, when printed at three (3) slides per page, would serve as Participant Guides/Handouts. Fifty-one (51) pages of relevant documentation accompany the presentation modules. Most of the discussions taken were from the author's experience with the Company in an AMPS-CDMA environment. Research sources in the form of textbooks, equipment manuals, magazine articles, and even Internet web sites helped the author immensely in the preparation of the contents. The author came out with several propositions that could be considered to improve the project even more: Use of more powerful computers, more compact data storage devices and the latest version of presentation software to integrate multimedia applications such as video clips, sound recordings, etc., to each module. Make the presentations highly interactive instead of just presenting a slide and discussing the slides on it. Update the contents of the module every six (6) months to incorporate new developments in the field of cellular communications. Develop the modules on GSM, for the audience to have a well-rounded appreciation on the worldwide dominant standards: AMPS, CDMA, and GSM. Introduce new modules on Personal Communications System, Wireless Local Loop, less-known cellular standards like North American IS136, Europe's Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT), Japan's Personal Handyphone System (PHS), etc. The author believes the final test of the project would be to pilot-run this Cellular Technology Training Module to the Graduate School of Engineering.
