Description
Summary:The chloroform extract of the air dried leaves of Vitex negundo (Linn.) afforded vitexilactone (D2) and casticin (D1), by silica gel column chromatography. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR, IR and UV spectroscopy and confirmed with those reported in the literature. The isolates D2 and D1, reduced the micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MPE) induced by Mitomycin C by 62 % and 83 %, respectively. Thus, the compounds are antimutagens. The antimicrobial activity test showed that the compounds have moderate activity against the fungi: Candidia albicans and Aspergillus niger and slight activity against bacteria: Staphyllococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but inactive against Eschirichia coli and Bacillus subtillis.
