This thesis is a literary-historical document of the National Writers' Workshop in Dumaguete. It deals with the workshop's history, rationale and impact.Creative writing as a program of study under Silliman University's English department aims to provide students with a general knowledge of writing, especially literary writing. Drs. Edilberto and Edith Tiempo were the faculty of the creative writing program, and the ones responsible for establishment of the workshop which was inspired by their experience at the lowa Writers' Workshop. The workshop has contributed to the creative atmosphere in Silliman. It has also served as a model for other workshops established in the country. Fellows of the workshop comprise a who's who of Philippine letters and are active in the craft of writing.The direct analyzing and scrutinizing of the manuscripts is the means by which literary principles are imparted in the workshop. The National Writers' Workshop in Dumaguete is associated with Philippine writing in English. The spread of New Criticism is also attributed to it.
