In power line data communications, the power lines present a hostile transmission environment for the data signals. A serious source of impairment is the presence of high noise levels in the power lines, which are usually impulsive and synchronous with the power line frequency of 60 Hz making it periodic at 8.33ms. Bit errors occur with a higher probability at these times of high noise. To address this impairment error control coding is usually employed with a high degree of security against bit errors. However, as the degree of error protection increase the system throughput is sacrificed. This study presents a timed transmission technique where data is sent only during times of low noise to take advantage of the lower probability of bit error that will allow minimum error control coding and thus achiever a better throughput. To demonstrate the improvements of timed transmission, a comparative analysis between a timed transmission and non-timed transmission system is presented in terms of BER measurements and the expected throughput (when error control coding is employed) at different baud rate conditions.
