Summary:Web caching is in use throughout the world to reduce access latency and bandwidth demands for Web object transfer. And its transparent deployment has been taken advantage of since it does not need prior knowledge of client for caching to be usable. But locally deployed proxy server can easily be overloaded when the number of clients continues to increase. Deploying a single, cutting-edge server machine with advanced hardware support and optimized server software will somewhat solve the problem, however the limiting factor is still with the hardware. With the rapid advances in hardware technologies nowadays, a powerful server today will easily become obsolete tomorrow, and major upgrades of the server hardware tend to be expensive and require substantial effort. The solution is to employ multiple servers, in the form of a cluster directed by a prototype load balancer. This solution is scalable because an increased in the load can be easily absorbed by adding new server to the cluster. Benchmark results will verify the research claim that a cluster solution for locally deployed transparent proxies is really scalable.
