Summary:This paper reports the findings of a multi-case study examining the impact of a production supervisor’s leadership styles to a subordinate's performance. The impact of the most effective leadership styles on employee performance was investigated among the production department of three selected food manufacturing firms in the National Capital Region of the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three leadership styles were tackled in the study namely: (1) Transactional Leadership, (2) Transformational Leadership, and (3) Laissez-Faire Leadership styles. The sample size of the study included the participation of 120 employees, and 3 supervisors among the three firms. This multi-case study utilized both qualitative interviews and open-ended surveys alongside quantitative survey methods to collect data. The study makes use of a mixed-method approach where both theoretical and empirical methods were used to investigate the outcomes of leadership styles to employee performance. Different perspectives of the production supervisor’s leadership style and employee performance were tested, examined, and compared to develop the study’s outcome. Moreover, findings of the study reveal that Transformational and Transactional Leadership styles are the two most effective leadership styles affecting a significant impact on employee performance. A combination of both Transformational and Transactional Leadership produce the best results in improving Employee Performance in the production department while ensuring COVID-19 protocols are well implemented.
