Summary: | The study seeks to assess the manifestation of nationalism in the careers and compositions of Ryan Cayabyab. The researcher hopes to contribute to the lacking historical studies on his contributions to Philippine music by analyzing his works through the lens of nationalism. The objectives of the study are, to describe nationalism in music through Ryan Cayabyab’s careers and compositions; discuss how his compositions contribute to Philippine music identity and how he defined it through the combination of indigenous sounds with western aesthetics; and analyze his compositions through Dr. Christi-Anne Castro’s views that public performance is the text of the nation and how musicians are actors who perform their nation. The study covers the period from 1970 to 2018. The year 1970 is when he first began his career in the music industry while 2018 was the year, he was conferred the Order of National Artist for Music. The compositions discussed belong to the period covered in the citation for National Artist. The study was conducted through the descriptive-analytical approach using the historical method and supplemented by oral history. |
