The COVID-19 pandemic has brought structural and functional changes to organizations, with the adoption of virtual teams generating interest in virtual leadership communication in the contemporary workplace. To what extent does media richness determine the way virtual managers communicate with their teams? What are the other factors that drive managerial decision-making in the conduct of virtual work? Through a thematic analysis of the strategic ways in which virtual team managers of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) manage media richness (i.e., determination of the appropriate Microsoft Office 365 application), exhibit digital mindset competency, and showcase virtual coaching skills, this research thesis examines the relationship between media richness and the local perception of managerial effectiveness in the demonstration of virtual leadership for a digital workforce. The study argues that effective virtual leadership in the BSP during the COVID-19 pandemic is driven by three contributing factors: (a) media richness as facilitator of change in leadership communication practices; (b) digital mindset as core of leadership communication in virtual teams; and (c) virtual teams as catalysts for institutional transformation.
