Description
Summary:This Action Research Created a Resilient Business Model for Sakura Musubi. It aims to develop a viable business model that can be used by an emerging small business to sustain operations amid disruptions. The unfavorable effects of the COVID-19 pandemic pushed many companies into bankruptcy and closures globally. These adversaries challenged the business’ resiliency and preparedness. At the same time, the resulting consequences of retrenchment and reduced income took a toll on the affected employees. Therefore, having a feasible and flexible business model is proven to be imperative to any organization. The action researcher proposed to redefine the business model of Sakura Musubi, an emerging small business, to be adaptable to any situation. As a result of collaboration with the business owner, the desired outcome of this research was achieved and completed in two (2) cycles. The first cycle focused on creating a defined business model for Sakura Musubi through strategic interventions in the selected functional areas. Each area has specific strategies and identified desired outcomes that collectively yield the primary goal. The second cycle focused on maintaining the business model, as a result of cycle one, while handling a newly opened branch. Both cycles were conducted under unstable conditions, such as a volatile market and pandemic threat. Yet, the outcomes per functional areas were met and yielded a general result, a simple business model that could surpass various circumstances, hence the resilience. Aside from the primary methodology, which is action research, three methods of inquiry were utilized to complete this study. Frameworks were used to understand better the context of this research: PESTEL Analysis, Dynamic Capabilities Framework, Business Continuity, and Systems Theory. Generally, this action research may be most beneficial for new small businesses. The strategies adhered to the opportunities and threats of the business environment during the research period and may vary depending on the changes in the macro-environment. The interdependence between the frameworks and the strategies used defined an improved business model for Sakura Musubi.
