The overall goal of this study is to investigate whether sibling rivalry plays a mediating role in the relationship between perceived parental differential treatment and depressive symptoms. The sample consisted of 103 college students aged 18-24 years old, are living with their same-sex parent, and have a same-sex sibling with an age gap of at most 4 years between them. Results suggest that for the direct path, there is a significant relationship between perceived parental differential treatment and depressive symptoms. As for the indirect path, perceived parental differential treatment is found to be significantly related to sibling rivalry and sibling rivalry is significantly related to depressive symptoms. Through multiple regression analysis, results also suggest that 52% of the effect of parental differential treatment on depressive symptoms is mediated by sibling rivalry.
