Summary:The paper presents an effective method in attaining sustainability of a water resource system. It particularly focused on a case study on the traditional community irrigation system of Baranggay Taytay, Majayjay, Laguna. This research analyzes the traditional irrigation system of Majayjay and the role of community based resource management in attaining sustainable development. Physical characteristics of the area from its watershed, biodiversity, hydrology and water quality were analyzed in order to assess the physical sustainability of the water resources. Socio-economic and cultural aspects were also studied, which evaluated the sustainability of their livelihood and socio-cultural practices. Good community leadership, effective governance, and innate ecological wisdom have assured the barangays of the sustainability of their water resource.
