Product oriented layouts are organized around products or families of similar high-volume, low variety product. The main goal is to balance the output at each workstation on the production line so that it is nearly the same, while obtaining the desired amount of output. The challenge is deciding how to assign tasks to workstation whose goal is to minimized idle time and increase utilization while having a smooth, continuous flow.Heuristic procedures are followed in order properly assign tasks. They are methods based on simple rules that have been used to develop good solutions for the problems arising from the line balancing methods.The researcher investigated the effect on the line balance if the precedence constraints are violated. A new procedure has been devised. Applications to existing production lines produced higher productivity and efficiency on some and lower on others.
