Description
Summary:The article analyzes the political ideologies expressed in the pastoral statements of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP), published during the Duterte administration. To facilitate the hermeneutic analysis, the study utilized the modified ideological spectrum by Demeterio (2012), with two dimensions (progressive-retrogressive and libertarian-authoritarian) and eight political ideologies. It was found that CBCP’s ideological perspectives during Duterte’s regime is between liberal libertarian and moderate. On the other hand, the ideological tendencies of UCCP have been classified as liberal libertarian and moderate in pre-pandemic period and liberal libertarian in pandemic period. In general, although UCCP maintains a stronger stance in examining social issues, the political ideology of both UCCP and CBCP still fall under the libertarian perspective based on the x-axis of the modified spectrum. Meanwhile, the y-axis of the spectrum indicates that both CBCP and UCCP has a libertarian perspective towards maintaining the rights of the individual and the state.
