Antimicrobial activity of banaba crude oil extracted using microwave-assisted solvent extraction (MASE) from banaba leaves and fruits
Crude banaba oils obtained by microwave-assisted solvent extraction (MASE) from banana (Lagerstroemia speciosa) leaves and fruits with ethanol and ethyl acetate as solvents, were screened for antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas...

Crude banaba oils obtained by microwave-assisted solvent extraction (MASE) from banana (Lagerstroemia speciosa) leaves and fruits with ethanol and ethyl acetate as solvents, were screened for antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using Kibry-Bauer Diffusion Method. The crude oil showed positive inhibition for antimocrobial activity, which demonstrated its applicability in the pharmaceutical and medical industries. The level of antimicrobial ability varied with the extract product and with the bacteria used. All four microorganism, however, exhibited activity at 100mg/ml with E. coli as the most sensitive and B. subtilis, showing the lowest zone of inhibition. The best inhibition was noted from the extract of fresh banaba leaves while the least inhibition was displayed by the extract with ethyl acetate as solvent. 2014-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/faculty_research/12622 Faculty Research Work Animo Repository Anti-infective agents Solvent extraction Extraction apparatus Lagerstroemia—Microbiology Chemical Engineering |
