Summary: | Fluidized bed dryer (FBD) system was introduced as an effective and efficient way to improve the shelf-life of brown rice as opposed to the conventional heat treatment method. However, to achieve the FBD’s full functionality, process automation is required. This study presents the development of an integrated controller designed for batch-type FBD system. The main controller used in this research is a programmable logic controller (PLC). The primary function of the controller is to integrate the three major FBD process parameters: temperature, motor speed and flow rate. The chamber and steamer temperatures are monitored and controlled using temperature controllers. The blower motor speed is controlled by an inverter driver while the flow rate is regulated by the flow controller. Moreover, a human-machine interface (HMI) was incorporated to provide the user with data monitoring, process visualization and an option for manual override. A data logger was added to record real-time process values from input sensors. The developed controller was tested and validated in terms of FBD functionality and performance. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved. |
