Description
Summary:While adolescents can identify their internal and external resources for coping, what prompts adolescents to utilize these is another matter. This study looked into internal factors that influence adolescents’ coping. Two hundred and forty-seven college students completed scales that measured their inner strength, spirituality, and use of coping resources. Results showed that strength of inner self (lakas ng loob) and spirituality are positively correlated to coping. More importantly, spirituality moderated the relationship between strength of inner self and coping. There was an ascertained stronger positive relationship between these variables for those adolescents with high as opposed to low levels of spirituality. These relationships were significant even after controlling for variables age and gender. This study constructively builds on theory of coping. Findings are deemed helpful in the development of programs in different contexts, which may enhance not only the Filipino youths’ external sources of support but their personal resources as well.
