Founded on 28 November 1928, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) is the country’s principal supplier of domestic and international telecommunication services. The company’s charter, which extends until 2028, authorizes it to provide virtually every type of telecommunication service. The PLDT has a network of 174 central office exchanges serving the Metro Manila area and 188 other cities and municipalities throughout the country. As of 31 December 1997, the number of access lines in service throughout the PLDT system was 1,662,631, representing approximately 80% of all access lines in the country. International long distance services are provided by the PLDT using two international gateway switching exchanges, submarine cables and satellite systems that connect the PLDT’s network worldwide. The PLDT also operates the Philippines’ only nationwide digital microwave backbone, which connects its own exchanges with 466 other local exchanges and 3 exchanges operated by the Philippine government. The PLDT’s national long distance network links 1,106 calling points in 806 municipalities throughout the country. Other services that the PLDT provides include digital leased lines for domestic and international communication, high-speed data transmission, high performance packet switching service, and private networking. Over the years, it has expanded its service from the telephone line to wireless mobile internet and adding new services to the public as new technology is invented. The PLDT WeRoam is a virtual mobile office or mobile private LAN or simply mobile internet. It comes with a variety of designs from the old WeRoam 2G versions to 3G Globetrotter. Now comes the WeRoam USB card type. Traditionally, the major requirement of WeRoam is the PCMCIA slot in the user’s laptop. With the new trend of USB modem, customers have the option now for their card type whether it is PCMCIA slot or USB. The PLDT’s IS User Division is in charge of the personal computers used for customer transaction, such as subscription and billing records. This division is also responsible for the installation of the customer service software used by the company. 2007-06-01T07:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/faculty_research/5424 Faculty Research Work Animo Repository Wireless communication systems Customer services Digital Communications and Networking
