Summary: | To realize the transition from manual to automated digital testing of medical devices in the BME department of some government and private hospitals in the Philippines, a study was done to become familiar with the BME department of the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, Sweden, which is a technologically advanced hospital in Europe. Investigations were made as to the design of the hospital's BME department and the types of technologically advanced safety tests and instrument testers used in the repair and preventive maintenance of medical devices. Automated electrical safety tests and other performance tests were performed on selected types of medical devices and the text results revealed that they conform with the safety standards of the IEC. For a more economical and efficient delivery of healthcare services, i.e., to gain more expertise in the repair and preventive maintenance of medical devices, hospitals in the Philippines should have a technologically advanced BME department, divided into different sections, composed of clinical engineers who can support and advance patient care. |
