Summary:Social awareness and relationship skills are essential for the students’ success during college and even after graduation. Using the social emotional theory (SEL) as framework, the study aimed to initially develop items that assess students’ social awareness competencies with its sub-constructs on perspective-taking, empathy, appreciating diversity and respect for other and relationship skills with sub-constructs on communication, social engagement, relationship-building and teamwork. Extensive review of literature was made which led to the construction of 80 items per sub-construct. Content validity was determined through consensus of five (5) experts in the fields of psychology, counseling and educational measurements. Results revealed items that are acceptable, rejected and for revision. Implications of this endeavor point to the use of the items in assessing the social awareness and relationship skills of the students leading to the proper design and implementation of college counseling programs in the future.
