| Summary: | Pakikisama is among the accommodative surface values, together with hiya and utang na loob (Enriquez 1992). This study is an attempt to review and examine the definitions and manifestations of the indigenous conceptualization of the pakikisama among university students using sequential techniques in collecting qualitative data. In the first part of the study, the respondents completed an open-ended questionnaire on their definitions of pakikisama, characteristics and behaviors of an individual who manifests pakikisama and one who does not manifest it, and personal experiences relating to the characteristics and behavioral manifestations of pakikisama. In the second part of the study, focus group discussions were implemented with a different set of respondents to further examine the manifestations of pakikisama and the contexts where it is manifested. The findings of the study are discussed using themes focusing on the manifestations of pakikisama, situational factors leading to the manifestations of pakikisama, and relational characteristics of an individual manifesting pakikisama. Implications for theory and research in Sikolohiyang Pilipino and Social Psychology are also discussed. |
