Psychopathology in Philippine context is explored through psycholinguistics, i.e. doing analysis of indigenous conceptions related to mental illness (disorder) experience. Conceptions from the local language were generated from narratives that were gathered from rural folks about karamdaman (illness, sickness, disease, disorder) and its correlates kalooban (inner being) and kaginhawahan (well being). Loob is a fertile concept where kalooban is derived, in which too denotes the experience of karamdaman. Dama (sense of, experience of) is the root word of karamdaman, in which also the strongly related words damdamin and pakiramdam are rooted. Extracting from allegories and metaphors their meanings and how these words were explicitly used in our language and culture are the means by which karamdaman similar to sakit (pain), hirap (hardship/difficulty) and dusa (suffering) is analyzed. Karamdaman is experienced in the katawan (body) as well as with ones katauhan (being). Karamdaman is associated with angin (as also used in Malaysia and Indonesia to refer to air) and hinga (breath), which connotes similar meaning i.e. spirit. Empirical evidence from narratives about the experience of karamdaman particularly of mental illness, disordered mind, and deviant behavior were generated from the grassroots. Kabaliwan is a karamdaman (mental illness). Kabaliwan is cited to illustrate how the kalooban suffers from such an experience. Damdamin expresses the suffering and desires ginhawa (well being). Ginhawa is achieved through spiritual exercises such as in religious rites/rituals. 2022-08-12T09:18:19Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/faculty_research/6593 Faculty Research Work Animo Repository Psychology, Pathological Diseases—Psychological aspects Well-being—Psychological aspects Other Psychology |
