Cultivating life: A theory on student affairs management in autonomous Philippine university

This is qualitative research using grounded theory methodologies describing the psycho-social process of cultivation in the management of student affairs in autonomous universities in the Philippines. A purposive sample of 10 autonomous higher educational institutions across regions in the country is covered by the study. Data were gathered through ethnographic site observations, face-to-face interviews of student affairs heads, professional student leaders and alumni as well as through review of literature, institutional documents and survey questionnaire. The study was able to define the scope of student affairs work, partnership with students in the formation of students, two-tier personnel roles and functions, leadership of student affairs deans and student leaders, resource management practices, among others. Grounded on data, the theory on cultivation emerged as the core theory of student affairs.
