The efficacy of combined Moringa oleifera (malunggay) seeds and alum as substitute for pure alum as coagulant via jar test method

The main objective of the study was to test the efficacy of the combined Moringa oleifera seeds and Alum (CMA) as substitute to pure Alum as coagulant for water treatment. Magnaye, Rejie C. Tumambing, Sanni Rose B. Ilagan, Ethel R. The main objective of the study was to test the efficacy of the combined Moringa oleifera seeds and Alum (CMA) as substitute to pure Alum as coagulant for water treatment. Water samples collected from Calumpang River located in Batangas City were treated in a sequence comprising coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration using the following Moringa seeds to Alum proportions: I 00:0, 80:20 and 50:50. The optimum dosage of the best coagulant formulation was then determined using the same series of treatments stated. Water treatment was done via jar test method with the use of a fabricated jar testing apparatus. Determination of the best coagulant formulation and optimum dosage were based on percent reduction attained on water properties namely Turbidity, TSS, TDS, BOD and Color. Results showed that the best CMA formulation was 50:50 Moringa seeds to Alum ratio and the optimum dosage was 50 ppm. Reduction of up to 99.57%, 57.35%, 3.40%, 68.97% and 80% on Turbidity, TSS, TDS, BOD and Color respectively were achieved. Statistical analysis suggested that the mentioned water properties after treatment using CMA coagulant and pure Alum were comparable. Therefore, CMA coagulant is an efficient substitute to pure Alum. 2007-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/faculty_research/7300 Faculty Research Work Animo Repository Coagulants Moringa oleifera Alum Water—Purification Chemical Engineering
