Summary: | Retinoids, a group of compounds which include Vitamin A, has recently been shown to play new roles in gene regulation specifically controlling expression of homeotic genes. The implication of this role to developmental process particularly axial patterning, teratogenesis and cancer treatment is discussed. Mechanism for retinoid's molecular action is presented. The occurrence of DNA-binding retinoid receptors (RAR and RXRs) and the identification of several retinoic acid response elements (RAREs) evidenced retinoid' s molecular importance to cell. Updated review on absorption, metabolism, function, deficiency effects and retinoid binding proteins is included. |
