Experiment 3: Bromination nd debromination of cholesterol (addition, elimination)

The usual methods of synthesizing commercial cholesterol results in contamination with small amounts of cholesterol derivatives mainly 3β-cholesterol, 7-cholesterol-3β-ol, 5,7-cholestadien-3 β-ol and cerebrosterol or 24-hydroxycholesterol 1 . Complete purification of Cholesterol (5-cholesten-3β-ol)...

Description
Summary:The usual methods of synthesizing commercial cholesterol results in contamination with small amounts of cholesterol derivatives mainly 3β-cholesterol, 7-cholesterol-3β-ol, 5,7-cholestadien-3 β-ol and cerebrosterol or 24-hydroxycholesterol 1 . Complete purification of Cholesterol (5-cholesten-3β-ol) was done by bromination reaction producing dibromocholesterol and debromination reaction of dibromocholesterol to produce pure cholesterol. The effectiveness of the experiment was evaluated by melting point determination. Thin Layer Chromatography analysis and through IR analysis. The experiment showed a percentage yield of 67.34 percent on the final product.
