Summary:Polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit is one of the most widely used drill bits in drilling operation.The interaction model between the PDC cutters with the rock is essential in optimizing the rate of penetration (ROP), and tool life.There are several factors which affect the performance and structural integrity of the drill bit.Some of these factors include rock lithology, cutter material, number of cutters, cutter profile, cutter orientation, weight on bit (WOB), depth of cut, rotational speed, drilling fluid property (e.g.viscosity and specific heat), working condition (pressure and temperature).The interactions can be studied by using a numerical model.This research is aimed at developing a new numerical model by using smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH).From the simulation results, empirical correlation will be developed using response surface analysis.Furthermore, a numerical simulation model will be developed and validated using the experimental data as a benchmark case study.A series of simulation studies will be performed based on design of experiment.It is hoped that the result from the study will be used to determine a set of drilling parameters to produce the optimum ROP and attain higher efficiency in drilling operation. © 2023, Institute of Technology PETRONAS Sdn Bhd.
