Assessment of Genetic Diversity of Philippines Moringa Oleifera lam. Accessions Using RAPD and ISSR Markers

Moringa oleifera Lam., also known as “malunggay” in the Philippines, is the most cultivated species of the family Moringaceae worldwide because of its varied economic and medicinal uses. However, despite its importance, studies in the Philippines regarding genetic characterization and genetic divers...

However, despite its importance, studies in the Philippines regarding genetic characterization and genetic diversity analysis are yet to be established. In this study, RAPD and ISSR were used to assess the genetic variability in 80 accessions of M. oleifera collected from various provinces in the Philippines. Percentage polymorphism was observed to be high using nine RAPD primers and 11 ISSR primers with 69.70 and 91.05% values, respectively, and the Total Percentage Polymorphism of the combined RAPD and ISSR markers yielded 82.30% which is also exceptionally high. The polymorphic information content (PIC) values of RAPD markers range from 0.0300 to 0.3870 with an average heterozygosity of 0.1087 while the PIC values of ISSR range from 0.0717 to 0.9860 with an average heterozygosity of 0.4553. These figures indicate that there is high genetic diversity among the 80 accessions studied. In addition, it was found out that ISSR with a marker index value (MI) of 7.8635 is a more effective marker than RAPD with an MI value of 1.5951 in assessing genetic diversity among these accessions. 2024-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://archium.ateneo.edu/biology-faculty-pubs/157 https://doi.org/10.17660/ActaHortic.2024.1394.3 Biology Faculty Publications Archīum Ateneo average heterozygosity malunggay Marker index percent polymorphism polymorphic information content Horticulture Life Sciences Plant Sciences
