Employing emerging computational techniques and conventional qualitative approaches, this study examines the effectiveness of online protest movements in Indonesia and the Philippines. Simultaneously deployed, these protests were organized by journalist groups against repressive state actions that muzzled the press in these countries. The study compares the strategies of the two movements to illustrate the success factors in social media usage that bolstered the participation of the national and global publics, and marshalled international support. 2024-12-01T08:00:00Z text https://archium.ateneo.edu/comm-faculty-pubs/30 https://doi.org/10.1177/17427665241288949 Department of Communication Faculty Publications Archīum Ateneo Democracy and digital media digital media and global publics online political protest political dissent in Southeast Asia press freedom in Indonesia and the Philippines state repression Communication Journalism Studies Social and Behavioral Sciences Social Media |
