In this chapter, we cover some key aspects of the disinformation and misinformation problem. We look at its context and a means to fight it using Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior (CIB) detection. There are many mechanisms that can be used in the battle against disinformation and misinformation. Detecting disinformation and misinformation using CIB is just one of them. But if algorithms can be used to exploit these platforms and ecosystems then algorithms can also be used to keep these same platforms and ecosystems honest. However, given clear evidence of manipulation using disinformation and misinformation, platforms and users alike must be careful when looking at information from the Internet. We argue that even ordinary users must be educated to be careful with such information from the Internet. There is a need for more research in this space, more awareness building, and more cooperation. It takes the cooperation of all participants in this “Internet Commons” to ensure that it remains a free, open, and healthy space for generations to come.
