Description
Summary:José Tan Sunco (Chen Guangchun 陳光純) (1853-1924), a Chinese businessman in Manila from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, is less known in the Philippines than some other Chinese immigrants to that country who rose from rags to riches. In Quanzhou, China, however, he was one of the most prominent men of the day. His is one of the stories of the attempts made by members of the Chinese diaspora in the early twentieth century to contribute to China’s modernization, and of the important role that the Philippines played in that regard, not only in terms of financial resources, but also of social resources.
